Senate Democratic Leaders Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has recommended former CFPB Assistant Director Rohit Chopra for a seat on the Federal Trade Commission.

Chopra currently is a senior fellow at the Consumer Federation of America, where he leads research and advocacy on consumer protection in finance and higher education.

Chopra is an outspoken critic of Trump and House Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling’s (D-Texas) to roll back the regulatory regime created in the Dodd-Frank Act. The FTC has five members; only three of them may be members of the same political party. There are three vacancies on the commission and presumably Trump would have three Republicans serving on the commission.

In recommending Chopra, Schumer said that the commission should be led by people who put the interests of consumers above all else.

Chopra was one of the CFPB’s first employees and he led the agency’s student loan efforts, serving as the agency’s first student loan ombudsman. After leaving the CFPB, Chopra served as a special adviser to the Secretary of Education.

He holds a BA from Harvard College and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
