San Francisco-based Hewlett Packard Enterprise introduced two security solutions, one protects information in Internet of Things environments and the other is a search and investigation tool built on security operation platforms.

HPE SecureData for Hadoop and IoT features Apache NiFi integration with NIST standardized and FIPS compliant format-preserving encryption technology to protect IoT data at rest, in transit and in use.

“When we say data centric protection we’re talking about this capability to utilize encryption and tokenization in a format preserving way,” Carole Murphy, product marketing manager, HPE Security – Data Security, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, explained. “We’re pushing that data protection right out to the IoT edge.”

While IoT provides an enormous quantity of information delivering valuable insights and analytics to help organizations innovate, the influx of connected devices also presents new security challenges and attack vectors. The data generated from IoT is a valued commodity for adversaries, as it can contain personally identifiable, payment card information or protected health information. According to a Gartner survey, security is the top barrier to IoT success cited by respondents (35%), followed closely by cost and funding concerns (32%).

Hadoop is an open-source framework for storing information and running applications on clusters of hardware. Apache NiFi, derived from the National Security Agency’s Niagarafiles project, is an integrated open-source data logistics platform for automating the movement of data between disparate systems. Apache NiFi enables security and risk architects, as well as business users, to graphically design and easily manage data flows in their IoT or back-end environments.

The HPE SecureData NiFi integration enables organizations to incorporate data security into IoT strategies by allowing them to manage sensitive data flows and insert encryption closer to the intelligent edge.

ArcSight Investigate, a search and investigation product in the ArcSight family provides up to ten times faster search using HPE Vertica, a high-performance SQL analytics engine, as an embedded high-performance database; an intuitive search experience using customizable dashboards; and direct integration with Hadoop as a long-term data lake.

“Financial is a strong focus for security operations,” Travis Grandpre, director of product marketing, HPE Security ArcSight, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, said. “The product is focused on the investigation and search capabilities within a security operations center.” Grandpre added. “In the security market, seconds matter.”

HPE, through conversations with SOCs, heard about the need for more intuitive search and investigation built on their security operations platform. According to Grandpre, “The thing they continually tell us is the tools that they have today don’t really give them the speed they need to do search and investigation and they don’t have the tool to give them that great user experience to make it a simple process.”
