The $309 million Maine Savings Federal Credit Union in Hampden announced its longtime advisor and former longest serving board chair, Harold Grant, 93, died over the Labor Day Weekend.

Grant played a vital role in advancing Maine’s credit union movement and helped guide Maine Savings to become one of the largest and most progressive financial institutions in the state, according to the credit union. A Bangor native, Grant became involved with Maine Savings in the early 1960s.

In 1968, he was appointed to the credit union’s supervisory committee, and a year later he was named a member of the board of directors. Grant assumed the role of board chair in 1989, a position he held until 2007. Grant was the longest-serving board chair in the credit union’s history.

“Harold Grant was a leader, a mentor, and a best friend,” John Reed, president/CEO of Maine Savings, said. “He worked tirelessly to help us build and grow Maine Savings into the high-performing institution it is today. He will be dearly missed by all of us in the Maine Savings family.”

In 1997, Grant received the Maine Credit Union League’s Outstanding Credit Union Volunteer Award in recognition of his efforts to preserve the well-being of Maine Savings staff, credit union members, and local communities.

Grant had a successful career in finance, real estate, and insurance, including working for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, where he first became involved with BARCO FCU (the precursor to Maine Savings). Harold served in the Army Transportation Corps during World War II and also served as a selectman for the Town of Kenduskeag.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, Sept 8, from 6–8 p.m. at Brookings-Smith in Bangor, followed by funeral services on Friday at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Harold Grant’s name to the annual Maine Savings college scholarship fund. Contributions can be made in person at any Maine Savings branch or mailed to “Maine Savings Scholarship Fund,” P.O Box 347, Hampden, Maine, 04444.
