The Alabama Credit Union Association has endorsed Republican Sen. Luther Strange in this year’s special Senate election.

Earlier this year, Strange was appointed by former Gov. Robert Bentley to fill the term of former Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, who vacated the seat to serve as President Trump’s attorney general.

The primary election will be held on Aug. 15 and if no candidate in the primary receives 50% or more of the vote, a runoff will be held on Sept. 26. The general election will be held on Dec. 12.

The Alabama league’s board formally voted to endorse Strange last month. He had served as the state’s attorney general before his appointment.

The Alabama league, an affiliate of the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates, said that Strange has long been a supporter of community-based financial institutions and favors a rollback of Dodd-Frank. In addition, the league said that during the last year as attorney general, he supported legislation to create data security notification standards for the state, a goal of the Alabama league.

“Sen. Strange recognizes the integral role credit unions play within their communities,” said LSCU & Affiliates President/CEO Patrick La Pine. “As attorney general, his office backed legislation favorable to credit unions. It is important for our credit unions to support individuals who are aware of the need to constrain harmful regulations, and we look forward to working with Sen. Strange as he continues to do what is best for Alabamians and credit unions.”

Bentley resigned as governor earlier this year after pleading guilty to campaign finance violations. He had scheduled the special election to coincide with the 2018 election. However new Gov. Kay Ivey rescheduled it for this year; ten Republicans and eight Democrats have qualified for the primary ballot.
