15,000 CU Employees in the Path of Hurricane Irma

About 5.5 million credit union members and their nearly 15,000 employees are in south Florida or along parts of its coast under watches or warnings for Hurricane Irma’s arrival expected early Sunday.

An analysis of NCUA data by CU Times shows there are 137 Florida-based credit unions with in the areas most at risk as of Saturday morning, most of them south of Lake Okeechobee. As of June 30, they had $61.5 billion in assets, 326 main offices and branches and 852 ATMs.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service had placed areas near the Gulf and Atlantic coasts south of Orlando under hurricane and surge warnings. These coastal areas include headquarters for eight credit unions from Boca Raton to Key West with 97,505 members and 333 employees. They have assets of $1.3 billion, 34 branches and 190 ATMs.

Eight credit unions based in areas under hurricane surge warnings are:

  • Financial Federal Credit Union, Miami, has 6,759 members and 14 employees. Its assets are $50.7 million.
  • Monroe County Teachers Federal Credit Union, Key West, has 2,195 members and 7 employees. Its assets are $28.1 million.
  • Southernmost Federal Credit Union, Key West, has 1,914 members and 5 employees. Its assets are $14.9 million.
  • Miami Federal Credit Union, Miami, has 2,832 members and 11 employees. Its assets are $32.9 million.
  • Town of Palm Beach Federal Credit Union, West Palm Beach, has 378 members and 2 employees. Its assets are $2.8 million.
  • South Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Boca Raton, has 2,585 members and 6 employees. Its assets are $14.5 million.
  • Coral Community Federal Credit Union, Fort Lauderdale, has 4,603 members and 11 employees. Its assets are $31.4 million.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service had extended hurricane and surge watches north along the Gulf Coast from Tampa to Indian Pass on the panhandle, and from Cape Canaveral to the Georgia border on the Atlantic coast. This includes 14 credit unions based in zip codes at or near those coasts with nearly 1.1 million members and 2,613 employees. There assets are $12.6 billion, with 144 branches and 642 ATMs.

The remaining 115 credit unions are inland but south of Lake Okeechobee in southern Florida. They have 4.3 million members and 12,039 employees. They have $47.6 billion in assets and 148 branches.
